Late last summer, Bridget and I traveled to the the State Fair in Syracuse to join Commissioner Ball in touring the Fair's agricultural exhibits and discussing the needs of the industry. The conversation covered the Taste New York Program and milk pricing, as well as finding ways to drive more NYS produce from our family farms into our schools, colleges and other state institutions.
During the day, we also:
1) Met with dairy producers, maple growers, farm wineries, and other producers;
2) Discussed future legislation with Assembly Agriculture Agriculture Committee Chair - Bill Magee;
3) Spoke with ag. literacy and youth education groups from our region (including 4-H leaders from Otsego County) about their current efforts to promote youth as leaders; and
4) Met with the coordinators of an on-site public education program which allowed families to learn more about the dairy industry and watched a baby calf being born.
